Judges Announce The Longlist For The 9Mobile Prize For Literature 2018

The 9mobile Prize for Literature is committed to encouraging new African writers.
The longlist is made up of entries received from African writers who recently published their first works of fiction within the last 24 months. Our dear Ayobami Adebayo made this longlist. You can read more about her writing ethics HERE.
Below is a list of nine books which made the longlist.

Bronwyn Law – Viljoen- The Printmaker
David Cornwell- Like it Matters
Lesley Nneka Arimah- What it Means When a Man Falls Down From the Sky
Marcus Low- Asylum
Mukuka Chipanta- A Casualty of Power
Odafe Atogun- Taduno’s Song 
Qarnita Loxtan-Being Kari
What kind of work is eligible?
  • First book of fiction (that is, first printed production in book form)
  • Word count: Over 30,000 words
  • Work must have been published in the last twenty four (24) months.
Authors and their publishers must not be situated in African country. As long as they are African, they can apply from anywhere in the world.
Prize/Awards
  • The overall winner of the 9mobile Prize for Literature will receive a cash award of £15,000,
  • A high end device will also be given to the winner.
  • 9mobile will sponsor two book readings for the writer. The first of the two readings will hold in Lagos. The second reading will hold in the write’s country of residence.
  • The winner will be given the opportunity to attend a 9mobile Fellowship at the University of East Anglia mentored by Professor Giles Foden (author of The Last King of Scotland).
  • All shortlisted writers will have 500 copies of their books purchased by 9mobile and donated to various schools, book clubs and libraries across Africa.
